Safety & Disclaimers
Please read these notices before installing or using PEAK Gauge.
1. Lithium battery safety (battery version)
The battery version of PEAK Gauge contains a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Safe storage temperature is 32–140 °F (0–60 °C). A car parked in the sun can get far hotter than that inside, especially on the dashboard.
- Don't leave the gauge in a parked car in hot weather. Take it with you, or store it somewhere shaded and cool.
- Don't charge or use it below 32 °F (0 °C) or above 140 °F (60 °C).
- Stop using it right away if the gauge or battery gets unusually hot, swells, leaks, smells, or is damaged. Don't puncture, crush, or take apart the battery.
- Recycle the battery according to local rules. Don't throw it in household trash.
Lithium batteries can overheat, catch fire, or explode if they're mishandled, exposed to high heat, or damaged. By choosing the battery version, you accept the risks of owning and using a lithium-battery device. Peak Gauge isn't responsible for damage or injury caused by leaving the device in excessive heat or ignoring these instructions.
2. Reading accuracy
PEAK Gauge shows data your vehicle reports through its diagnostic port and your OBD-II adapter. It always shows the most recent value your vehicle has sent. How current that value is depends on the reading:
- Live readings such as RPM, speed and throttle are requested many times per second. They can still lag slightly behind what's happening in the engine.
- Slower readings such as coolant and oil temperature are requested less often, because they change slowly.
- Periodic readings are only sent by your vehicle every so often, and PEAK Gauge can't make them arrive any sooner. Tire pressure is the most common example: most tire pressure (TPMS) systems send an update only about every 30 seconds, and often only while the car is moving. Tire readings will therefore always lag behind actual tire pressure. After a stop, or right after you start the car, they may show an old value or none at all.
Readings may also be inaccurate or unavailable depending on your vehicle, its software, and your adapter.
- PEAK Gauge is a supplementary display. It is not a replacement for your vehicle's factory gauges and warning lights, and not a diagnostic or safety tool. For example, if your car's own tire-pressure warning comes on, trust it over the gauge.
- Don't rely on its readings for safety decisions or for diagnosing or repairing your vehicle.
- Clearing trouble codes doesn't fix the underlying problem. It may also reset your vehicle's emissions readiness status, which can affect an emissions inspection.
To the extent permitted by law, Peak Gauge isn't responsible for inaccurate, delayed, or missing readings, or for any decision made based on them.
3. Distracted driving
Don't tap, swipe, or otherwise operate PEAK Gauge while driving. Set up your gauge pages, thresholds, and settings while parked. Keep your eyes on the road; don't stare at the display.
- Mount the gauge so it doesn't block your view of the road, mirrors, or airbags, and follow local laws on where devices may be mounted.
- Use the drag timer only on a closed course or drag strip, never on public roads. Its times are estimates from OBD speed and the gauge's motion sensor, not official timing.
- The driver is always responsible for operating the vehicle safely.
Peak Gauge isn't responsible for accidents, injuries, or violations caused by distracted driving, by where the device is mounted, or by using the drag timer anywhere other than a closed course.
4. Your OBD-II adapter
Your car's OBD-II port connects to its internal electronics. Like any wireless device, an adapter plugged into it can be reached by other devices nearby. Misuse is rare, but a few simple habits help keep your car secure:
- Use an adapter you trust. Choose a known brand, such as one of our tested adapters, and don't plug unknown devices into the port.
- Unplug it when you won't be driving for a while, such as when the car is parked for several days, left at a repair shop, or parked somewhere unfamiliar. PEAK Gauge reconnects to it by itself when you plug it back in.
- Unplugging also avoids a small drain on your car's battery during long periods without driving.
Peak Gauge isn't responsible for unauthorized access to your vehicle through an OBD-II adapter or port.
