Tested OBD-II Adapters

PEAK Gauge works with Bluetooth LE (BLE) OBD-II adapters that are ELM327-compatible. You can add an adapter when you order, or use your own. Below are the adapters we've tested ourselves.

Vgate iCar Pro 2S: available with your order

We currently carry the Vgate iCar Pro 2S, which we've tested with PEAK Gauge. You can add it when you order PEAK Gauge, so everything arrives in one box.

Also sold separately: Vgate iCar Pro 2S (Amazon)

Other tested adapters

  • Veepeak OBDCheck BLE (Amazon)
  • Vgate iCar Pro BLE 4.0 (Amazon): the older model of the iCar Pro 2S above.
  • OBDLink CX (Amazon): if you've used it with a phone app, remove it from your phone's Bluetooth settings first and unplug it for a few seconds, so it can pair with PEAK Gauge.
  • DauntlessOBD (Dauntless Devices): see below.

DauntlessOBD: fully compatible

PEAK Gauge is fully compatible with DauntlessOBD. It works in the normal OBD-II port like any adapter. On the Gen 2 BRZ/GR86 it can also connect to the ASC connector behind the dash through an ASC CAN adapter (see below). There PEAK Gauge reads the car's own broadcasts, including gear, fuel level and the pedals, and recognizes the connector automatically. With an Ansix kit or a GJP Mini IO Box fitted, it also reads oil pressure. See the manual for details.

Gen 2 BRZ/GR86: using the ASC connector

The BRZ/GR86 (Gen 2, ASC+DD) and BRZ/GR86 (Gen 2, ASC+CAN) profiles read data from the ASC connector behind the dash, not the OBD-II port. To plug an adapter in there, you need an ASC CAN adapter:

ASC CAN adapter (Hachi Electronics)

  • ASC+DD: ASC CAN adapter + DauntlessOBD
  • ASC+CAN: ASC CAN adapter + any tested adapter above

It comes in two versions: ASC Retention passes through to the factory sound module, so the fake engine sound stays. On the ASC+DD profile you can still switch it with PEAK Gauge's ASC toggle; ASC+CAN has no ASC toggle. ASC Delete replaces the module, so the fake engine sound is gone for good.

You don't need it for the standard BRZ/GR86 (Gen 2) profile, which reads everything from the normal OBD-II port. See Vehicle compatibility for what each setup shows.

Tested and not supported

We've tried these with PEAK Gauge, and they don't work well enough with it for us to support them.

  • LJPXHHU OBD2 Bluetooth Scanner (sold on Amazon; shows up as "OBDII"): only reaches the engine computer, so many readings show N/A and features such as ASC on/off don't work.
  • ViaBecs OBD2 Scanner: readings update too slowly.
  • OBDLink MX+: uses classic Bluetooth, so PEAK Gauge can't connect to it, even though it works with iPhone. The OBDLink CX above is OBDLink's Bluetooth LE model.
  • MHD WiFi adapter: connects over WiFi, not Bluetooth LE, so PEAK Gauge can't connect to it.

Choosing your own adapter

PEAK Gauge connects over Bluetooth LE only. Many inexpensive adapters use classic Bluetooth instead, and those won't work. The product listing usually tells you which kind it is:

  • Works with iPhone/iOS, or says "BLE" or "Bluetooth 4.0" or newer: almost certainly Bluetooth LE. A good sign.
  • "Android only" or "not for iPhone": classic Bluetooth. It won't work with PEAK Gauge. For example, the Veepeak Mini Bluetooth (Android only) is a different adapter from the Veepeak OBDCheck BLE we've tested.
  • WiFi adapters: won't work.
  • Adapters made for one particular app, sold with their own app or subscription and not described as ELM327-compatible: these usually only work with that app, so they won't work with PEAK Gauge.
  • EcuTek dongle: the Bluetooth dongle used for EcuTek tunes isn't an ELM327 adapter, so it won't work with PEAK Gauge. Use one of the tested adapters above instead.

Budget adapters: many inexpensive ELM327 adapters can only talk to the engine computer. They handle standard readings like RPM, speed and temperatures, but readings that come from the car's other modules, like steering angle, wheel speeds, brake pressure and tire pressures, show N/A, and ASC on/off doesn't work. The version number on the box or in the listing doesn't tell you which kind you're getting. For the full feature set, choose one of the tested adapters above.
